338 Federal Load Data

The 338 Federal cartridge has been out for a couple of years now, and published data is becoming easier to find. Here are several sources.

Hodgdon

Hodgdon is one of those great companies in the field of shooting sports. Not only do they have very consistent powder production, and their Extreme line of powders are so resistent to temperature fluctuations, but they are the most progressive company out there in terms of publishing load data right on the web, even for some of the more obscure cartridges.

Hodgdon has developed load data for the 338 Federal cartridge, and it is available on Hodgdon's online reloading data center. They have data for bullet weights ranging from 160 grain to 225 grain.

Barnes Reloading Manual #4

The long-awaited Barnes Reloading Manual #4 was released this year (2008), and it includes data for the 338 Federal. I was particularly looking forward to this because I was hoping to use their new 160 grain Tipped Triple-Shock X-Bullet for a low-recoil deer cartridge. However, for some reason they did not include data for their 160 grain bullet. Other bullet weights are covered.

Speer

Speer has load data and dimensional drawings for the 338 Federal on their web site. One can probably assume that they will have the cartridge featured in the next release of their reloading handbook.

Ramshot

Ramshot has load data available on their web site for X-Terminator and TAC powders.

Guns & Ammo

Guns & Ammo has an article on reloading the 338 Federal, and they include eight loads.

Load From a Disk

Load From a Disk is a software program that can calculate load data for pretty much any cartridge. It comes with a large database of cases and bullets, but of course the 338 Federal is not in there. However, you can define your own case by giving it the dimensions, and Load From a Disk can calculate loads from that.

For the sake of my experimentation, I have been playing with 308 Winchester dimensions, modified for a wider neck and mouth.

Update: The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure is 62,000 PSI.

Magazine Articles

Shooting Times wrote up the new 338 Federal cartridge in their March 2006 issue. Included in the article are some handloads that were used. Note that this isn't load data per se, as no pressure testing was done. Still, it is something to consider.
